‘Hypocrisy, disgrace and disregard for law and order laid bare’

NatSec police ask Agnes Chow to come back to Hong Kong. An official ‘sorely vexed’ press release suggests someone is not happy…

The [HK government] issued a solemn statement today (December 4) to condemn strongly the shameful acts of Chow Ting, who was arrested by the National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police Force for suspected violation of the offence of “collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security”, of absconding to avoid legal responsibilities. She blatantly claimed in social media that she planned to jump bail, which is a total disregard of law and order. The HKSAR Government will spare no effort in bringing her to justice in accordance with the law.

Chow Ting’s flagrant disregard for police bail terms showed that she is completely devoid of integrity. She has also never soberly reflected on her acts, which are suspected to have violated the law, but has tried to escape from legal consequences. No matter what excuses she put forward or how she attempted to deceive and win sympathy, her hypocrisy, disgrace and disregard for law and order are laid bare.

Endangering national security is a very serious offence, and the HKSAR Government will fight against it with full force and pursue the liability of the person to the end. Fugitives should not have any delusion that they could evade legal liabilities by absconding from Hong Kong. Fugitives will be pursued for life unless they turn themselves in.

The HKSAR Government urged Chow Ting to repent and co-operate with the Police, be responsible for her own act and turn over a new leaf, before it is too late for regrets.

To paraphrase PG Wodehouse, it is never difficult to distinguish between a ray of sunshine and a HK government press release with a grievance.

Guardian story.

Closing statements in the HK47 trial…

“This charge of conspiracy is like no other charge that has come before the courts,” [barrister Trevor] Beel said, concluding his arguments. “Everything was conducted openly for the simple reason that nobody knew what they were doing was illegal.”

The Chief Secretary denies that civil servants will be penalized if they fail to vote at the District Council election. But it seems the government really wants them to…

The official rejected the speculations at a civil service family day in support of the overhauled election organised by the Disciplined Services Consultative Council and the Police Force Council.

…Local media reported on Sunday citing sources that Secretary for Civil Service Ingrid Yeung had written to all department heads and said government employees must be allowed to leave their posts and vote when polls open this coming Sunday. Civil servants will also be allowed to claim back transportation fees incurred from travelling between the office and the polling station, local media reports read.

So how does the government actually know if a civil servant votes or not?
If they are given time off, will they be supervised on their trip to the polling station?
Transport costs will be reimbursed? Does that mean busfare or taxi?
So they are offered money to facilitate their voting. How will that be monitored?
I think the people of Hong Kong have looked at the new “improved” voting system, and the numbers of people they can vote for, and will make their own decisions as to what to do.

“So how does the government actually know if a civil servant votes or not?

HKID numbers are crossed off a list of eligible voters when you present your ID card to collect the voting papers. They may not know how you voted, but they can know that you turned up to vote.

  3. wmjp says:

Just how many civil servants will be in the office on Sunday?

a civil service family day in support of the overhauled election organised by the Disciplined Services Consultative Council and the Police Force Council.

Given that there are two separate so-called councils does this imply that the police force is an undisciplined service?

  4. Paul says:

Obviously when you vote the fact that you have done so is recorded, not least to avoid you voting twice. Who you vote for is (should be) secret, but the fact that you have voted (or at least turned up at the polling station ans submitted a ballot paper, whether with a vote or not) is not secret.

Oh, but if it only was about “national security”. So what’s next? HK popo will set up a clandestine body snatching unit to travel globally to bring back absconders and foreign country colluders?

  6. Paul Lewis says:

Yes, people who vote have it recorded, but surely that list is not available to anyone, let alone the government checking if public servants have voted

  7. Reactor #4 says:

The irony is that Chow’s self-centred actions have seriously 4cked over the futures of the other rioters who are currently banged up. The authorities will now impose even tougher constraints on them once they are released. At this present moment, I suspect that her head is floating around on a luxurious flying-carpet of smug. However, when this mood subsides, I sincerely hope she spends the rest of her life in in deep contemplation and regret.

    @Chinese Netizen

The popo already have the United Front for that. https://twitter.com/C4Dispatches/status/1729848380807848255

  9. Probably says:

Shouldn’t civil servants be actively DIScouraged from voting in order that they display no political bias to their potential future ministers?

  10. Kwun Tong Bypass says:

    Dear Hong Kong,

I am so glad that I have returned according to the law just for election day!

After studying and understanding the improved democracy in Hong Kong according to the law, I will of course do according to the law what every patriot in Hong Kong should do on election day.

The progress that was made by the improved leadership of the new Hong Kong according to the law is just incredible!

    After all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUzDtKdVmfI

Yours truly, according to the law comprehensively reinvigorated Marx-Leninist

@Rectum#4 – You know so little, but that would not be surprising. History shows how lickspittle Quislings were forever ready to bend over to dictators. Yes, let Chow have a m0re serene life ahead of her in freedom than the Stasi cretinism you wallow in so smugly. Have a good drink on that for the rest of your days.

  12. Formerly Known As... says:

    @HKJC Regular

Thank you for that. Saving me the bother of having to comment on Rectum#4s repugnant swill.

  13. Load Toad says:

Fewer & fewer people will want to stay, to visit, to invest. HKG destruction is nearly complete.

Given the state of HKG finances (WebbSite today) then these are hardly the good Hong Kong stories that are needed.

Foreign ‘interference’ made HKG prosperous & free. It seems that other forces are happy to pillage it & ruin it.

Although Chow has scarpered off to Canada, she seems blissfully unaware that its Prime Minster has little time for civil disobedience. Check these:

There is a fallacy, which infects almost all of the commentators who follow this blog, that democratic countries are ‘free’ and are better than here on numerous fronts. They are not, and Hong Kong offers many positive things (which explains why so many of gripers still hang around in the city despite their incessant moaning). Those who don’t like the system here really ought to leave. Actually, I won’t pay for their flights, but I’ll definitely cover their Airport Express fees (one-way). In fact, I’ll be more than happy to escort them to the Chek Lap Kok.

  15. Low Profile says:

It is perhaps worth pointing out that Agnes Chow was only on bail under suspicion. She has not been charged with any national security offence. Furthermore, her previous conviction was in relation to unlawful assembly, not to riot, making Reactor #4’s mention of “other rioters” potentially libellous.

  16. True Patriot says:

    @sarcophagus#4
There must be some 600,000 “gripers” in town and if they follow your wish costing you some 60 million just on AirPort Express tickets. One way.
    Wow! You really mean it.
But no worries, I have good news for you:

    We ain’t leaving!

Better learn to live with us.

P.S. in the long run, the worst democracy is still better than the best, if there is something like this, Marx-Leninist dictatorship.

  17. Mark Bradley says:

Does “on bail under suspicion” require any nominal judicial intervention oversight or is it purely in the hands of the police?

And christ shut the fuck up rectum #4. Canada is still far more open for protests than HK though I certainly am not a fan of anything that allows for freezing of assets (or civil forfeiture) even if they are anti vax truckers

Besides in Canada you can vote out bad leaders, no such option on HK and governance is not better here than the west, it’s actually much worse. Taxes are low and that is appealing for many including me for tax residency but that isn’t a result of our amazing governance or lack of the ability for the public to vote in leadership but rather due to the way land is handled as an indirect tax.

    @ Retard # 4

This is just a bunch a false equivalency and whataboutery. One involves a case of “Tommy” disrupting an antisemitism protest and getting pepper sprayed and another involves an Irish anti immigration riot. Fuck off you dumb cunt.

  19. HK-Cynic says:

I suspect that the HK Government wanted and expected Agnes Chow to flee. Just one less problem for them going forward – but they put out a statement to cover their a$$. Would be nice if that her treatment would be repeated a couple of thousand more times.

As for the election turnout, the “encouragement” for civil servants to vote will probably increase the turnout, but will it also increase the number of spoiled / blank ballots as well? If I was a civil servant, that is what I’d be doing just to cover my career prospects. Zero downside to show up, take a longer lunch that is subsidized and submit a blank ballot.

  20. MeKnowNothing says:

“I suspect that the HK Government wanted and expected Agnes Chow to flee.”

Yeah, just like the coproaches wanted the protesters to do something after they retreated from the LegCo building during the extradition bill protests…

    Drop trousers pass wind!

Everything is as The Party wants it & The Party controls EVERYTHING now.

To even suggest the Hong Wrong Special non-Autonomous Region of the People’s Pandemic Own-Goal & Perpetually Cack-Handed Paradise so-called government has any desires, aspirations, plan, strategy or even any semblance of intelligence is an insult to our intelligence.

  21. James says:

@Mark Bradley why bother? you don’t really think he read more than the headlines of his own links? Trolls, incels and the like only do this to get a rise from a community. I’d wager he’s alone at home and generally disliked elsewhere. He’s no different than someone who wears blackface or nazi regalia to a halloween party
