Nothing good happening

In today’s warm-and-cuddly NatSec regime ‘hearts and minds’ successes: an activist is arrested for unauthorized assembly at a 2019 protest against the Yuen Long attack; and Esther Toh of Hong Kong’s oh-so independent judiciary denies bail to Roy Tam, jailed since April for participating in a primary election.

Trouble on the way for the legal sector, especially if the Law Society doesn’t vote the way the CCP wants today.

More depressing points about the Mainland-style trial of Andy Li, co-option of the courts and retroactivity of the NatSec Law in our own comments section, if you haven’t read them.

Time to listen to some music.

What do you mean, “nothing good happening”? Only this morning Carrie was appearing live on TV telling us about all the wonderful opportunities arising out of the 14th Five-Year Plan. Aren’t you thrilled? Incidentally another sign of our new status – if the Dear Leader gives a speech, all the news channels cut to it live and stay there as she keeps droning on.

In other news: Nicole-gate rages on — with more fuel added to the fire courtesy of “The Expats” filming in Mongkok last night with not only a crowd of mask-less extras and Nicole Kidman but a mask-less director, etc.

In reply to Hemlock’s twatter post about Irishman come lately Yank Jim Thompson and the ensuing barbs at Crown’s “quality” when it comes to household goods relocations, I’ll just add that I’m sure the most profitable parts of his business are actually records management and the wine cellars/bunkers. Oh yeah…and pet relocations.

Records management is a low effort moneymaker as once a corporate signs on, it’s hard to ever get out or change provider ever again.

You should change your banner to read: “It’s all for the good of the community” or some other clap trap.

Also, you folks talking about bitcoin being a disaster waiting to happen, please, please, educate yourself on the actual technology you are claiming is a fraud or an irrelevant junket.

  5. Goatboy says:

Donkey – please, please educate yourself on the actual meaning of junket.

    @YTSL

It gets even better. Nicole Kidman is cast to play “Margaret”, a Eurasian character that is 1/4 Korean. Obviously none of the Eurasians are suitable for the role, it can only be given to privileged tone deaf Kidman.

Goatboy. autocorrect. I meant a junk. like the boat.

@Mark Bradley: I guess neither Scarlett Johansson nor Emma Stone were available. And in other entertainment news today:

This is what’s helping the fuel the rage for some people: even while the Hong Kong government bends over backwards to facilitate the production of “The Expats”, it is doing what it can to stop certain films (like say, Hong Kong documentaries, including those that have won awards internationally or had their world premiere at Cannes) from being seen.

Yup. All while Carrie says with a straight face that HK’s constitutionally guaranteed freedoms have not changed followed by “freedom is not absolute” if the riffraff press needle Carrie enough. Total fucking cunt.

  10. HKJC Irregular says:

@Chinese Netizen – Indeed – and begorrah! Jim Thomson was officialised as a plastic paddy with full Irish citizenry rights by the Republic of Ireland’s consulate here in Hong Kong and then doubles down on oppression by backing the NSL.
How Cromwellian of him! Would be a giggle to watch this yank/canuck donning his shamrock at the next St Patrick’s pisshup saying the NSL – and therefore Black & Tans – were a grand idea.
The Irish consul general would do well to revoke Thomson’s new passport, but that country has sold itself down the swannee in recent years so they’ll bag Crown dollars. Oh, the irony.
Imagine the furore in the ol’ country had some Englander with a newly conferred Irish passport said similar.

  11. Chinese Netizen says:

You’d think Kidman-Urban didn’t need the shekels so badly to the point of stepping into this shitshow (Hong Kong during a pandemic AND implementation of Orwellian law enforcement all while the majority of the top government officials of where she’s filming are under sanctions) but “tone deaf” and thick skin beggars description for many of Hollywood’s “elite”.

  12. Chinese Netizen says:

@HKJC Irregular: All rather ironic as Thompson’s tai tai is fully English. But tax evasion and loyalty can make a man more….pragmatic.
