Dave QC drops out

Not much of a surprise given the criticism: David Perry QC has dropped out of the prosecution of Jimmy Lai, Martin Lee, Margaret Ng for the CCP’s Hong Kong regime. Funny how the government can write a relatively short whiny press release when it feels like it. Looks like the days when overseas lawyers took on such work are over. With the outgoing Bar Association head warning that the NatSec regime has diminished judicial independence, overseas Court of Final Appeal judges will be under more pressure to quit.

The Hong Kong government is meanwhile planning to let the Immigration Dept bar people from exiting the city. This is ostensibly an amendment aimed at asylum-seekers, but it could easily be applied to would-be emigres, BNO passport holders, or anyone.

Here’s a clue. Uncle Bob – a cockney-speaking Hongkonger who does some amusing food/lifestyle vids – detected suspicious Gestapo-types lingering at the airport, as if to monitor who is leaving town for LHR. Given that many pan-dems (and other) people have a range of documents to use (BNO, HKID, HK/Portuguese/Canadian/other passport), perhaps the Immigration Dept computer system can’t keep track of everyone, so they want to do visual IDs of faces.

The UK hits back at Beijing’s threats to take action against BNO passport holders moving to Britain. HKFP looks at one family that’s leaving.  This is early days.

As if the Brits aren’t annoying enough, a London borough is thinking of renaming streets to piss off the newly relocated Chinese embassy. While wondering how to pronounce ‘Xiaobo Road’, local residents may also be able to admire the Tibetan flag flying from the town hall.

    “a London borough is thinking of renaming street names to piss off the newly relocated Chinese embassy.”

    Turnabout is fair play. The British Embassy in Tehran used to be on Churchill Street, until it got renamed Bobby Sands Street: https://goo.gl/maps/SzHPyJ53YjSmX6br5

  2. Stanley Lieber says:

    Apparently the new Chinese Embassy in London is to be located atop “the burial sites of victims of the Black Death.”

    How’s that for good feng shui?

    Or is it just karma?

  3. Feilo says:

    It was always assumed that BJ wanted to move into the city obedient mainlanders to dilute cocky citizens and recently to encourage further binding to the Great Bay Area concept they decided for HK. If this is true, why they want to prevent BNOs and other people not invested in that scheme to leave?

  4. Ho Ma Fan says:

    @Feilo – because they want to have their face and eat it. Or not lose cake. Something like that anyway…

  5. Chinese Netizen says:

    @Feilo: Face? Why would ANYone want to be in a rush to leave such an amazing place full of potential (GBA! B&R!!) and ruled by the political system/party of the future??

  6. Din Dan Che says:

    Uncle Bob is spot on when he says those Gestapo-type mugs and tossers (as he calls them in the eloquent sub-titles) remind him of baggage thieves at mainland airports. I fell victim to once such cnut but have also been heartened to see them apprehended – by fellow passengers. And they had the same dodgy demeanor as those flotsam currently making our airport seem like Pyongyang’s, as Bob astutely put it.

  7. Stanley Lieber says:

    @Feilo

    Because “You can’t quit me! I fire you!” mentality.

  8. Knownot says:

    David Perry, I am very
    Sorry that I will not
    Hear you make the Hong Kong Government’s plea;

    I’m so aware of the loss you bear:
    That you will not
    Earn a single Hong Kong Dollar fee.

  9. Hermes says:

    @Feilo
    Possibly spite and hubris? I presume they want to prosecute as many as possible who may have taken part in protest-related activities. Also they may consider it a loss of face and it would reflect badly on them if they acknowledge that so many people want to leave the HKSAR and the glorious future that awaits in the GBA.

  10. Knownot says:

    In the 1970s, the street in Calcutta where the American Consulate was located was renamed – Ho Chi Minh Street.

    – – – – –

    But, seriously . . . this kind of thing is childish, isn’t it?

  11. Casira says:

    Well the liaison office is on Connaught road.

  12. Kwun Tong Bypass says:

    I guess, now that the communists clearly do not live up to the 1C2S, maybe the Brist could also reneg the agreements and take Hong Kong Island back! It was given to the commies as a bonus for good behavior, and now it should be given back.

  13. Toph says:

    A mass exodus of several hundred thousand Hong Kongers would, besides embarrassing Beijing, establish diasporic communities in rival nations too large, opinionated, and activist to be neutralized through the usual United Front tactics. I think they want us where they can see us.

  14. Where's my jet plane says:

    “Foreign Native English Teachers at gov’t schools could be made to swear loyalty to Hong Kong as oath requirement expands” HKFP

    That should thin the ranks of those who might be interfering foreigners undermining HK’s education system.

    Who has Jimmy Lai appointed as his defence QC / SC ? A Barrister in the mould of ‘George Carmen’ could show up the whole pantomime to prove once for all, to even the most cloth eared of Barristers (Dave Perry), that rule of law is, if not dead, severely wounded. Sadly it is almost a hiding to nothing in terms of the verdict.
